What is your saddle height?

Your height gives an immediate first estimate. Adding your inseam narrows the range.

Too high or too low?

Too high: your hips rock on the saddle or your toes reach for the pedal at the bottom.

Too low: your knee stays strongly bent and you feel pressure at the front of your knee.

Does your current height differ by more than 10 mm? Change at most 5 mm per ride.

Pain or tingling? Stop cycling and have a bike fitter check your position.

What we do not include yet

This advice uses only your height and inseam, calculated for a road bike. Bike type, riding goal, flexibility and core stability usually shift your saddle height by just a few millimetres, within the range above. In a free account we include them, save your measurements and narrow the range by measuring twice more.

Payment does not narrow your range. That takes additional measurements.

Your ideal saddle height is expected to be between 740 and 840 mm. Based on your height (estimated inseam).

What does this range mean?

We calculate your saddle height from your measurements. Every measurement has some error, and every body responds slightly differently to the same formula. Together, these give a range that contains your ideal height in 19 out of 20 cases; better measurements make it narrower.

The short answer

Your height gives an initial saddle-height estimate for a road bike. Optionally add your measured inseam for a usually narrower uncertainty range.

Measure saddle height from the bottom bracket centre along the seat tube to the top of the saddle.

What this cannot tell you

The range describes uncertainty under the calculation model and is not a safe adjustment zone. Shoes, pedals and movement on the bike are not measured. Check an unusual inseam measurement; an unresolved warning keeps the range wide. Test small adjustments and stop if you feel pain or tingling.

How do we calculate this?

How we calculate

Without a measurement, inseam is estimated as 0.47 × your height. The advice is inseam × 0.883. The 95% range combines measurement uncertainty with variation in the formula; its bounds are rounded to 5 mm. Bike type, riding goal, flexibility and core stability are not requested here.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring your inseam with shoes on.
  • Measuring saddle height from the ground instead of the bottom bracket.
  • Entering an estimate as though it were a careful measurement.
Start with height, add inseam for a narrower range

Why this builds trust

Start with height, add inseam for a narrower range

The advice uses only your height and optional measured inseam, calculated for a road bike.

Advice with an uncertainty range

You see a calculated saddle height with a 95% range for measurement uncertainty and variation in the formula. The range does not guarantee a comfortable setup.

Built on measurement discipline

A careful inseam matters more here than extra complexity. That makes the output easier to trust and explain.

Part of the full fit picture

Saddle height does not live in isolation from reach, drop, and comfort. That is why this remains a starting point inside a wider system.

FAQ

FAQ

Short answers to the key measurement questions.

How do I measure inseam for saddle height?

Stand barefoot, place a book firmly between the legs, and measure from floor to the top of the book.

Can I start without my inseam measurement?

Yes. Enter your height; we estimate inseam as 0.47 × your height. Optionally add a measured inseam to usually narrow the uncertainty range. The advice is calculated for a road bike.

What does the 95% range mean?

The 95% range combines uncertainty in your inseam with variation in the formula. It is an estimate under the calculation model, not a safe adjustment range. A careful inseam measurement usually narrows the range; its width depends on your measurements.

When should I have my saddle height checked?

A saddle that is too high can make you reach for the pedals or rock your hips. A saddle that is too low can leave your knees deeply bent. Stop if you feel pain or tingling and have a bikefitter check your position.
